Medicare Enrollment Periods

Most people that I talk with know about the Annual Enrollment Period, when their television and mailbox blows up with those annoying ads and flyers urging you to call Joe Namath or telling you they have the best plan in the world. But many people are unaware of the other enrollment periods available throughout the rest of the year, so let's take a quick look…

Initial Enrollment Period –
3 months before through 3 months after Turning 65

This enrollment period allows people who are turning 65 (or under 65 and on Social Security Disability for at least 24 months) to enroll in Medicare Parts A & B for the first time. During this time you can enroll in Original Medicare, or postpone Medicare Part B, depending on whether or not you continue to work and be covered under credible insurance through an employer or union plan, with at least 20 participants. Once both Medicare Part A and Part B are turned on, you will have the opportunity to enroll in supplemental insurance plans such as a Medicare Supplement plan and Prescription Drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan, sometimes referred to as Part C of Medicare, because it combines your hospital coverage, medical/doctor coverage and usually your prescription drug coverage in one plan.

Annual Enrollment Period –
October 15th through December 7th

This is the time of year, every year, when Original Medicare enrollees have the option to change some aspects of their coverage, including:

  • CAN switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan
  • CAN switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medicare Supplement and Drug plan or vice versa
  • CAN switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug plan to another drug plan

Open Enrollment Period – January 1st through March 31st

During this timeframe, a Medicare enrollee who has a Medicare Advantage plan can also make these changes:

  • CAN switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan
  • CAN switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medicare Supplement and Drug plan, but NOT from a Supplement plan to an Advantage plan
  • CANNOT switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug plan to another

Special Enrollment Periods – Any Time of the Year

There are a multitude of reasons people MAY be eligible to make changes or enroll in Medicare plans throughout the rest of the year. Some such life-changing events that may qualify for you to make a change are:

  • Gaining or losing Medicaid coverage
  • Your current plan no longer has coverage in your area
  • Loss of, or you choose to leave, employer group insurance
  • Going into or leaving a nursing home, and many other reasons

The bottom line is, if you want to make a change to your Medicare supplemental insurance plan(s) at any point, please call me at (858) 935-9120 to see if there is an election period available to help you make that change.

Happy New Year in gold lettering.
